PhD opportunities at UCL

🎓 I have a fully funded PhD position available at UCL. I'm interested in two broad directions:

1. AI evaluation, auditing, and interpretability. Understanding the beliefs, goals and other internal states that guide neural network behaviour, and developing methods to measure and test their functional role. I've been working on this with controlled tasks, games, and agent environments, but I'd be also interested in scaling to real-world settings. Recent work: [1], [2], [3].
2. Computational models of human language use. Exploring innovative ways of using neural language models as models of comprehension and production, ideally following recent work on incremental prediction and belief updates, production choice, and information contours [4], [5], [6], [7].

The position includes 180 hours of teaching assistant duties per year, typically covering two courses. Recruitment for this position will be through the ELLIS PhD Programme. Applications are open and close on 31 October 2026.
